This is the catalog for Japan's first retrospective exhibition of Mark Rothko, a leading American painter who created "Color Field Painting" in the history of modern art. The catalog features a large collection of works from Rothko's early career to his final years.

Mark Rothko attended the Art Students League in 1925, where he created Expressionistic figure paintings and still lifes. In 1928, he met Milton Avery, an exhibiting artist at a group exhibition in New York. Rothko's painting style was greatly influenced by Avery, who became his mentor. Subsequently, throughout the 1930s, he painted landscapes and figures in "muted tones."
After holding his first solo exhibition at the Polish Museum in 1933, he presented his works almost every year.
Around 1946, he began to paint abstract paintings in a style called "Multiform."
In 1958, he began creating murals for a restaurant in the Seagram Building.
(He terminated the contract two years later because he was dissatisfied with the restaurant's space.)
This work later became the series known as the "Seagram Murals."
In 1969, he established the Mark Rothko Foundation to manage his works.
The following year, he committed suicide.

From the beginning of his artistic career, Rothko was influenced by many encounters with other artists, and he established his own style, the "Rothko style."
With this style, he became a representative artist of "Abstract Expressionism," alongside Pollock's "Action Painting."
